The total cultivable area is around 23 million acres and there are a little more than 14.5 million cultivators. Major agricultural products are rice, jute, wheat, potato, pulses, sugarcane, tobacco, tea etc. The total production of Rice, Wheat in 1995-96 was 17.68 and 1.36 million tones respectively, which is increasing in 1996-97 is 18.88 and 1.45 million respectively. A sizeable quantity of it goes into the export market. The Government has given due priority to the development of the agricultural sector. In the year 1996 the total irrigated area to cultivated area is 48.31%. During the year 1995-96, the total number of power pumps were 1674 (in thousand acres), which is increasing in 1996-97 is 1718 (in thousand acres).
